Fishing Report 5/2/2012
The early catch and release trout season ended Sunday, April
29, and it ended with a Bang. Water conditions were nearly perfect and
Hendricsons were plentiful. A few caddis were starting to show and it won't be
long before Sulphurs will be in the neighborhood. This week of closed fishing
finds us preparing for more trout fishing, of course, but also getting our bass
and panfish gear in working order for Saturday's general fishing opener. Rain
the last couple of days have pushed the river flows up a bit and they should be
in great shape as we prepare for another busy season.
As a proper kick-off to another fishing season, we are offering
25% to 40% discounts on several Sage fly rods. Bass rods to Z-Axis, ZXL to 99
rods, we have some premium rods at some great prices to start your season. Call
or email us for details on the models we have and the discounts for each.
Saturday, April 28 marked the first ever organized clean-up of
the Namekagon River. We worked in conjunction with the National Park Service to
organize a river cleanup from Hayward to Trego. 33 volunteers helped and we
collected several boatloads of trash. Other sections of the river are on tap
for clean-up as soon as we can organize it. The clean-up was a great way to
spend a Saturday and the Namekagon seemed happier for our efforts.
Shine up your gear and get out and enjoy the fishing season,
and, of course, the beautiful scenery that is Northern Wisconsin...Larry and

Updated Fishing Report 4/10/2012
After we posted a fishing report last week, the Hendricksons
started in earnest on Saturday and the fishing was really good, before the
rains came and halted the action. Sunday, Wendy and I fished through a nice,
but windy, afternoon. Hendrickson hatch began around 2:00, but the wind made
conditions sketchy. The fish could NOT refuse a properly swung brace of soft
hackles. Monday and Tuesday will be chilly, but the hatch should be in full
swing from Wednesday on. Get out and enjoy the civilized (2 pm +/-) Hendrickson
hatch, one of the Namekagon’s Super Hatches!
Fishing Report 4/7/2012
Trout fishing has been good on the Namekagon of late.
Dwindling hatches of stoneflies and pretty good hatches of little (size 20-22)
Blue winged olives make for some good dry fly action and nymphing continues to
provide the most consistent success. The water temps have been in the
mid-fifties for the last 6 days, which means the Hendricksons are not far
away. A few Hendrickson adults have been spotted over the last 10 days or
so, but nothing consistent. Peak runoff this year on the Namekagon was
March 18, which is about a month earlier than the historic average.
Reports from the Brule have been pretty spotty, leaning toward negative.
Most of the fish being caught are spawned out and on their way back to the
lake. The river is in great shape, so get out there….
Fishing Report 3/7/2012
The early catch and release season opened Saturday, March 3,
with mixed results. Fish were caught, but the water on the Namekagon was cold
and no hatching insects to bring the fish up. Yesterday, the tables turned. Air
temps were in the 50 degree range and, depending upon your location, water
temps were 41+ degrees. I caught fish nymphing ( black stonefly ) and by
mid-afternoon, the fish were rising like crazy. Black stoneflies, 12 to 16 were
in the air and all over the snow (see attached video). Others reporting in from
various locations on the Namekagon observed that the water temp only got to 39
degrees and, as a result, very few adult stoneflies were noticed and no rising
fish. Once again, the magic temp for optimum stonefly activity on the Namekagon
is 40 degrees. The weather is going to be very nice over the next several days
and the fishing should be awesome—get your stuff organized and come visit the
Namekagon…
